Almost 20,000 internationally-trained doctors and nurses in Ontario not working in their field during COVID-19 pandemic

QUEEN’S PARK – Michael Coteau, MPP for Don Valley East and Ontario Liberal critic for labour, today called on the Minister of Health to increase efforts to ensure internationally-trained medical professional can assist in the fight against COVID-19.

“In March, the College of Physicians and Surgeons launched a program to issue short-term licences in order to allow some foreign-trained physicians and domestic medical school graduates to practise under supervision,” said Coteau. “But my understanding is that by April, the College had only approved twelve applications.”

“Ontario has approximately 13,000 foreign-educated doctors and 6,000 foreign-educated nurses who aren’t working in their fields. To leave these professionals on the side-lines is a complete waste of talent,” Coteau concluded.
