Michael Coteau, Liberal MPP for Don Valley East, former Minister of Children and Youth Services, and former School Board Trustee, released the following statement:
“Today, Ontario’s financial watchdog uncovered the shocking truth of just how deep Doug Ford’s Conservative cuts will be in education.
At a time when student enrolment is increasing, this government has eliminated no less than 10,000 teaching positions in our elementary and high schools. This will lead to class sizes increasing by up to 27%, on average. In some schools, the damage will be much worse.
The last time the Conservatives were in power, our education system was a mess. One in three students were not graduating high school, classrooms were overflowing and teachers were not getting the resources they needed to give kids the brightest future possible. It took over a decade to fix that mess and bring our graduation rate up to 87%.
Doug Ford seems determined to go back to the past and make that chaos a reality once again.
This is not what parents want. This is not what students want. This is an irresponsible decision by a government that has shown time and time again that it puts ideology above evidence.”
